Why Morzine is the resort to take your family in 2023

Morzine resort

Morzine is the perfect ski resort for families. This is because it offers something that other French resorts do not – access to a HUGE ski area (second largest in France in fact), while still retaining small town charm. And let's not forget to mention Morzine is only one hour and fifteen minutes away from Geneva Airport - a very family-friendly transfer time.

Compared to the likes of Meribel and Val Thorens, which are the two largest resorts in France’s biggest ski area of The Three Valleys, Morzine attracts a crowd that is significantly less concerned about après and cheap accommodation.

The lack of sprawling purpose-built tower blocks and nightclubs give it almost an exclusive feel that attracts parents looking for a slightly quieter place to take their children on holiday. That’s not to say there isn’t anything going on in Morzine – in fact, there’s tonnes.

We clue you into some our favourite bars and nightlife spots and some of the best restaurants in Morzine in separate articles. In this article we’ll tell you all things that make Morzine the ski resort for families – from it’s ski schools and events to the activities you can do off the slopes.

Morzine Ski Schools and Day Centres

There are a huge number of day care centres and ski schools in Morzine. A favourite option for parents who want to take off for a morning or afternoon is Club Piou-Piou ran by French Ski School ESF. Children benefit from ski lessons, supervised play time and meals. BASS (British Alpine Ski & Snowboard School) is one of the most popular ski schools among families, thanks to their best-in-class English speaking instructors. For private childcare, Cheeky Monkey’s is well-known in the area.

Family Friendly Restaurants

Our guide to the best restaurants in Morzine gives you a proper insight into Morzine’s fantastic array of restaurants, highlighting Ô Chalet and L’Etale as two of the most popular among families. L’Etale is no stranger to hosting big family groups and is usually fully booked ahead of chalet night off, while a kiddie-friendly menu by Ô Chalet (and their indulgent burger menu for adults) makes it a no-brainer for families looking for a casual meal out.

Kid-friendly Activities in Morzine

Racing down the mountain with just a sledge and a head torch, night sledging is a favourite activity among groups of families who stay with us. Another option for family-friendly evening entertainment is the Ice Hockey. Home of the Penguins, there are regular games during the winter over at the stadium. For a day off the slopes, treat the kids to ice skating over at the Parc Des Dereches or a film at the Rex Cinema (there are showings in English).

Family-friendly Events

Looking to head to Morzine over Christmas and New Year? Expect fireworks, concerts, markets, and – of course – kids can meet the jolly red man himself over the 22nd and 23rd of December. New Years Eve is great fun in Morzine, with a display from the ESF instructors and fireworks. ESF also puts on the Red Ski Show over at the Pleney Lift every Monday during the French school holidays. Make sure to keep an eye on the events page on the See Morzine site for any events that have yet to be announced.
